In 1994 the Micheal Clark Dance Company premiered O, inspired by the modern ballet Apollo, 1928, orginally choreographed by George Balanchine to music by Igor Stravinsky. In 2004, O was restaged as O Stravinsky Project Part I and included the music of Iggy Pop as well as Stravinsky. The production shots by Jake Walters are from the latter production. O Stravinsky Project Part I was created to coincide with the exhibition Critical Dictionary at WORK, 27 January–25 February 2012.

Curator of Critical Dictionary, David Evans explains his initial reaction to O Stravinsky Project Part I: “I first saw this photograph by Jake Walters in a feature about the Michael Clark Dance Company in a recent issue of Artforum. At first glance I thought of a perfume ad; looking again I noticed the four feet and thought of the animality that is an important dimension of Bataille’s base materialism. It was this ambiguity that enticed me.”
