Freelance Gallery Technician

We are currently seeking a freelance Gallery Technician to undertake exhibition turnarounds on a recurring basis. The applicant would need to be consistently available for 5-6 exhibition turnarounds per year, and occasionally for setting up events hosted by the gallery. Exhibition turnarounds generally take place every 8-10 weeks for up to 10 days. Hours of work will be varied and may include evenings and weekends.

The successful applicant will liaise with the Gallery Directors and Manager to assess and plan each exhibition’s requirements and design, and will undertake the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions; the restoration of the gallery; and audio-visual set-up for events and screening programmes.

Tasks will include building and removing temporary walls; constructing plinths and cases; painting and decorating work; hanging and installing artwork; and setting up exhibition lighting and audio-visual equipment. The job will include working up ladders, using power tools, carrying and lifting. Solid DIY and building skills, and prior experience of manual building and small project management are requirements. The application should also be able to photograph exhibitions and film events to a satisfactory documentary standard.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in the arts, and have previous technical experience in a gallery or studio environment. A clean drivers’ license would also be an advantage, as some occasional transportation of artwork may be required. Candidates should exhibit due care in art handling, and an ability to work unsupervised and within health and safety guidelines.

This role is a changing and varied one, and would suit a student or part-time technician looking for ongoing work with semi-flexible hours. Wages are £10/hr. All tools, materials and equipment will be provided.
